I really love my Batman Archives. But I've been leery of picking up the Dark Knight Archives for some reason. Are the stories longer than the ones from Detective Comics? Better? Any featured villains besides the Cat(woman)? How would you rate 1. Batman Archives vs 2. Dark Knight Archives vs 3. Batman in World's Finest Archives vs 4. Dynamic Duo Archives (which I finally got a chance to flip through today -- I was impressed) IP: Logged |

Having read them all, I'd say the Golden Age creators really saved their A-list material, the top-of-their-game stuff, for the original anthologies like Detective and Action. It seems like some of the material in Batman and Superman could be described as page-filler. But that's just my opinion. They're usually all good stories, but the "great" stuff seemed to be reserved for the characters' original anthology titles. - Bill IP: Logged |

quote: I feel just the opposite, at least where Batman is concerned (I don't read any Superman stuff so can't speak to that.) Although the Detective stories in Batman archives are great, a lot of major "big events" happened in the Batman stories in Dark Knight archives. In Batman #1 alone you have the first appearance of the Joker (and it still rates as one of the best Joker stories ever), his return appearance, and the first appearance of Catwoman! It seems to me like most of the Detective stories (and it's been a long time since I've read them, so I may be misremembering slightly) were devoted to gangsters and crooks, where as a hgher percentage of Batman stories had the rogues galery in them. Although Detective was where Baman first appeared, Batman was the flagship book for the character. Everyone should get the first Dark Knight archives at least, for the awesome Joker stories! --Mark IP: Logged |

I need to have them all. Really I can't decide which of the Batman archives I like best (although I tend to think of the first Batman archive as the greatest simply because if collects those very first stories--and it has so many pages). I did post break-downs of villains appearing in different volumes, some months ago. I suppose that thread is long gone. Myself, I'm not high on costumed villains--I can take 'em or leave 'em--although I do appreciate the arc of the original Two Face stories, I find it interesting to see how they "turned" The Joker (after his death!), and Penguin's original penchant for Shakespearean and Keatesian verbiage was quite nice. But I just as much prefer the straight ahead detective and gangster stories. IP: Logged |

I'm with Mark. Try to get The Dark Knight Archive Vol.1, I think this one is really cool (after all, it was this Archive that made me hooked on Batman's Golden Age). ROCK ON!! IP: Logged |

I know it's been said before, but I really wish the Batman & Superman Archives had started out the way the WONDER WOMAN Archives did-- ALL the stories from the different magazines, collected in chronological sequence. The way things worked out, with Batman & Superman, you need a chronological checklist to know what order the stories should be read in, especially when you consider returning villains' continuities and character development. I have all of the Golden Age Batman archives and havbe enjoyed them. While most of his super-villains first appeared in Detective Comics (the Batman Archives), Joker and Catwoman both first appeared in Batman #1 (DFark Knight Archives). Most of his super-villains later appeared in Batman and have appeared in the Dark Knight Archives. The Batman stories in the Batman In World's Finest Archives #1 featured the common criminals only, with a small cameo by the Joker and Catwoman. I accidentally ordered an extra copy of Dark Knight Archives #3, which reprinted Batman #9-12. If you or anyone else is interested in buying it, I get the archives from my dealer for $30.00 each. I'll gladly sell my sealed extra for my cost, or trade it with someone for an Archive volume that I'm still looking for. Just email me at tadams908@yahoo.com ------------------ IP: Logged |

quote: Yes, but as far I'm concerned, it's great to have the two seperate series moving at different speeds. It's nice to have Batman in the late 40's while still getting early Batman stories in DK. I wish they had done that with GA Flash and GL. That way we could have raced ahead to the best stuff while extending the solo title stuff. Maybe it's just me. IP: Logged |

I have only volume one of DK, and every other Batman related volume.. I like the Batman archives better based on what I've read (Batman 3 being my favorite individual volume), though I am picking up the others.. Dark Knight Archives 2 and 3 are on the way soon!... IP: Logged |

Thanks folks. This convinces me to buy Dark Knight Archives one next instead of Dynamic Duo. How about the World's Finest one? I have a lot of those issues on microfiche but not all. As I recall they really put their best foot forward for the World's Finest stuff. I remember the art was grand. Any other thoughts? IP: Logged |

I just bought the World's Finest edition and really enjoyed it. However, I don't think it's as good as the Batman and Dark Knight editions. I like those about the same. You can't go wrong with any of them though. IP: Logged |

That's it. I'm getting Dark Knight 1 next and Dynamic Duo a little later on. I already have Batman 1-3 and the stories started to feel a little monotone. It's good to know Dark Knight's not just another Batman volume. IP: Logged |

To avoid confusion the Batman Archives should be Batman NOT DETECTIVE STORIES AND THE DARK KNIGHT or DETECTIVE ARCHIVES SHOULD be for the detective stories! The newspaper stories were great and some of the best I read from the 1940's. IP: Logged |

quote: I actually just finished reading Batman 1-3 (okay, I'm only about 1/2 way through vol 3), but the other day I picked up DK 1 and started reading that. I can say that it's a nice companion peice, and does have some good stories in there, but now being about half way through that (just started on Batman issue 3) I have noticed that it may not all be the creme of the crop. Some of the stories are a little on the boring side. But I might not be the best person to judge since I'm not that huge a fan of GA Batman (I didn't enjoy Batman vol 2 all that much either).
